Yan Garden: A Heritage Park Celebrating Art and History

Revitalizing the Past, Present, and Future of Dongguan

Located in Dongguan, China, Yan Garden is a rare surviving architectural complex that showcases the remarkable social and economic transformation of China since the Reform and Opening Up period. While many relics were removed during this time, Yan Garden stands as a unique microcosm of the country's heritage that cannot be replaced.

Designed by Vicky Chan and his team at Avoid Obvious Architects, Yan Garden stands out with its unique features and strengths. The park includes art studios, a community hub, and a museum, offering a diverse range of experiences for visitors. The project celebrates the philanthropic work of Mr. Wong Kam Fai, also known as Uncle Fai, and his contributions to the community.

The realization of Yan Garden involved three phases of construction and revitalization. The first phase included the construction of new buildings such as the Art Museum and Reception Hall, as well as vehicular access. The second phase focused on the revitalization of existing structures, including wall reinforcement, exterior restoration, and landscape enhancements. The third phase involved the interpretation and revitalization of smaller buildings within the park. Ongoing phases are planned to ensure sustainable development.

Yan Garden's design specifications include a sprawling 30,873 square meters of open space and greenery. The park incorporates 150 local plant species to enhance biodiversity and attract wildlife. The use of natural ventilation and microclimate design helps cool indoor spaces and reduce carbon emissions. The park also implements xeriscaping techniques to minimize water usage, with rainwater collection facilities for irrigation purposes.

One of the challenges faced during the design process was the transformation of the Yanling Guesthouse. While the building had historical significance, its interior layout proved too small for exhibition purposes. The design team decided to repurpose the guesthouse as art studios and provide a new museum and guest center to accommodate more exhibitions and leisure areas.

Yan Garden operates with a controlled flow of visitors, accepting reservations to minimize the impact on the heritage site. For artists participating in the residence program, certain restrictions apply to preserve the building's structural integrity. The project committee reviews and approves proposals to ensure they align with the site's conservation goals.

Recognized for its outstanding design, Yan Garden was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in Landscape Planning and Garden Design in 2021. This prestigious accolade acknowledges the project's creativity, resourcefulness, and contribution to quality of life improvements. The design seamlessly integrates art, science, and technology, making Yan Garden a true gem in Dongguan.
